Series Review: Penny Dreadful

I watched a Penny Dreadful a few years ago, but decided to revisit the series again. It is a brilliantly written story created by John Logan (Gladiator) and was developed for Showtime.

The story is gothic horror, my favorite, so it was very enjoyable for me. The story blends some fascinating horror characters from literature, including Dr. Victor Frankenstein, his creation Proteis, Lily Frankenstein, the Werewolf, Dorian Gray, Dracula, the Vampire, Dr Henry Jekyll, Van Helsing, and Mina Harker from Dracula. Logan, along with writers Andrew Henderaker and Kristy Wilson-Cairns, did a beautiful job of spinning a web connecting the story of each of the character together into a fascinating production.

The acting was superb with actors like Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway as Victor Frankenstein, Josh Harnett, Eva Green and so many more.

For three seasons, Logan and his writing crew made this one of the more addictive series in television and one of the best and most original takes on traditional horror characters ever.

My only criticism of the series is that it ended to soon. Season 3 began to explore the relationship between Dr Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll and the series ended before we ever got to see the introduction of Jekyll s alter Ego, Mr. Edward Hyde.

This series is a definite must see for horror fans and goes down as one of my top three personal favorite series of all time.

  1. I too watched Penny Dreadful, but earlier on, and never had the chance to finish the series. Perhaps I will revisit when time allows. Thank you for your always insightful commentary.
