Had an opportunity to watch Annihilation this week and have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I am not usually a big Sci-fi fan but this was promoted as a Sci-fi horror so i decided to give it a go.
Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X – a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Other expeditions have went into the area, referred to as “the shimmer”, but non returned: that is until Lena’s husband did; but he was not the same. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity. The two theories on the lost expeditions was they either steers killers, or they went mad sand killed each other. Disturbing video was found, left by the previous expedition which included Lena’s husband.
The horror element with the mutated creatures was good. The cinematography was incredible with beautiful landscapes from the shimmer’s new creations. Great balance of cerebral science fiction using biology and physics along with horror elements and mutated creatures.
It’s not going to blow you away but it is an enjoyable movie.
