Movie Review: X

I’m always excited when I hear about a new horror movie that has created a “buzz” in the horror community. So you can understand how anxious I was to finally get to see Ti West’s “X” after reading a few reviews. Now that I’ve spent 106 minutes of my life watching this movie, I sit in disappointment and wonder. Disappointment in the movie not living up to its hype and wonder about whether or not the critics were watching a completely different movie than I did.

A group of actors sets out to make an adult film in rural Texas under the noses of their reclusive hosts, but when the elderly couple catches their young guests in the act, the cast finds themselves in a desperate fight for their lives.

First of all, let’s get this out of the way. I heard a LOT of people say this was reminiscent of Texas

Chainsaw Massacre. Let me state adamantly that it was NOTHING like TCM. Texas Chainsaw was a freaking work of art and Leatherface is one of horror’s most menacing villains. The only similarities are the setting being in Texas, even though X was filmed in New Zealand, and the retro feel of the 70s.

This film had a Throwback Grindhouse feel to it and the cinematography and the soundtrack were both amazing. And I loved that West attempted to fuse porn with horror.

The writing was not good. I thought the acting was not bad considering the script, and Mia Goth killed it In a dual role. But there wasn’t enough horror substance nor even suspense to keep it going.

We were 64 minutes into a 106 minute movie before we got the first kill. And the ensuing kills were all different in method and level of gore. And honestly, the kills were kind of weak in grotesque and gore.

Overall, I felt like this movie let me down as did the reviews I read. I mean, at it’s core this movie was about an old psycho lady who is horny and needs to get laid. Maybe all that pent up sexual aggression made her snap.

Supposedly there is a prequel in the works and I hope it drags this one out of the grave with a better story.

  1. I haven’t yet seen this. But if your review is any indication of how good/bad this movie is, it is not worth watching by the sound of it.
